“The television, that insidious beast, that Medusa which freezes a billion people to stone every night, staring fixedly, that Siren which called and sang and promised so much and gave, after all, so little.”
-Ray Bradbury
How many hours a day do you spend watching television? How many times did you watch yet another reality TV show or a re-run of some drama series?
When you watch television, you put your brain in auto-pilot mode. It is a mode where you are not thinking but are simply sitting in a vegetative state being bombarded with a million images and sounds. Images and sounds that more often than not are either full of violence, sex, and sensationalism.
Well, I am not surprised. Multi-billion corporations decide what is shown on TV. Their interest lies in increasing profits, not enriching your life. In part this is also our fault, because if we continue to watch and accept the low quality programmes currently being aired, no wonder they continue doing them.
That is why I call television, the drain box; because it drains your brain of imagination, creativity, and thinking power.
What more could you do and achieve if you replaced the time wasted watching television with something else? Think about this for a moment. How many times did you say I do not have enough time to finish this task? There is so much that you can do instead of watching TV, such as reading an interesting book, going out with friends, learning a new skill, and getting active by going to a gym or practising a sport.
I suggest you read Steve Pavlina’s article “Reducing TV Watching” as a starter. After 30 days of reduced TV watching you will notice that your quality of life gets better. It worked for me, it worked for Steve Pavlina, and for countless other people. Give it a try.
Turn on your life, switch off TV.
