In this blog post I am going to tell you how I personally manage to process all the blog posts in my reader everyday. It used to take me about 2.5 hours a day to process an average of 300 blogs posts. But with the following tips I managed to reduce it to less than one hour.
Find a time slot for reading
Allocate a time slot during your day, say one hour during which make sure you do not get interrupted. This will help you to focus on your RSS reader and nothing else. I found out that most of the time I used to waste was due to interruptions that I got while I was reading a particular blog post. Phone ringing, speaking with someone in the same room and eating are just a few examples. If you want to manage to process about 300 blog posts in one hour you have to concentrate.
Read about one topic at a time
If like me you have several interests and you are subscribed to several blogs with completely different subjects, read one blog at a time. If you started reading about fishing keep on processing all the fishing blog posts before you move on to history ones. Switching from one topic to another is expensive since it requires you to focus on a different subject with every new blog post.
Read the title carefully
From the title I can say with 90% certainty whether the article is relevant for me and if it is worth reading. Make sure you follow this step, since you will find out that by carefully reading the title you will eliminate several useless blog posts. I found out that by examining the title thoroughly in my mind, I was automatically eliminating irrelevant blog posts on which I used to waste time reading them.
Read the blog post in parts
If the blog post is long, don’t read it sequentially. I found out that the following sequence to be the most efficient. First I read the introduction to get to know more what the blog post is about. If the introduction was satisfactory I skim through the points, headers and subheader of the blog post. If they sound interesting, I head on to read the whole blog post.
The more your practice the above tips, the more useful they will become. They worked for me and as I said, I manage to process the same number of posts, that is 300 blog posts, in less than half the time I used to spend before.
You can spend the time you save by using the above techniques doing something else, such as having fun and relaxing.
