Everyone faces serious decisions in life. Some of us face serious decisions more often than others. For instance, it is the job of a manager to be a decision maker, so naturally a manager will face decisions all the time. No matter how many times you have to face a serious decision, it is important to know how to handle such a situation when the time comes.
The most important component in taking a decision is the degree of uncertainty. The more variables there are, the more complex a decision will be and the more room for mistakes. Enter the study of risk management. Risk management is the study of playing around with variables to measure to a certain degree of probability your success rate.
Risk management is very difficult to do and a lot of care must be taken to select the right person to do this, to ensure an objective and unbiased risk analysis. My personal opinion is that the majority of people cannot do proper risk analysis. They think that risk analysis is all about trying to list all the bad things that can happen and analyse the probability that they actually happen, and then they stop there.
Hence if they are faced with a difficult choice in their live they tend to fear it, since it has a lot of variables and hence several risks associated with it.
But that is the mistake. You have to look at the whole picture and weigh both sides of the equation. By looking at the whole picture you will help balance off the risk involved with a decision. Most probably the larger the reward the higher the risk will be.
