Don’t go to the supermarket before reading this

Supermarkets are a good choice to get the best value for money. Due to their large volumes of sales, they tend to offer the best prices around. The way how supermarkets are designed makes boring shopping chores enjoyable. The aim of the supermarket designers is to present you with a wide selection of products (both competing and also complementary products) with the aim of making you spend more. Even though supermarkets tend to offer the best prices around, you still have to stick to your own budget or else end up overspending. Here are some tips on how to control yourself whilst you are between one shelf rack and another:

Never ever go to a supermarket without a list

Go to the supermarket with a WRITTEN list. Don’t trust your memory, write the list down. That way you will make sure that you buy everything that you need without allowing yourself to buy extra stuff.

Say no to SPECIAL OFFERS

Yes that’s right. If the product being promoted is not in your list, politely refuse to taste, see or get extra information about the product. You don’t need it, so it’s extra information to you.

Check the bottom shelf

When you locate the product that you need, don’t just pick it up and put it in your trolley. Check all the shelves, even the lowest shelf possible. Sometimes you will find that the most expensive brand occupies the eye level shelf whilst cheaper brands, which are also good, are placed in lower shelves.

Go shopping alone

Don’t take your husband or wife with you. Go do the shopping alone. This will give you more control on what to buy and stick to the list of items that you originally intended to buy. The more people you take to shop with you the more products are suggested and more items are placed in the trolley without you noticing J

Don’t take a trolley

If you went to the supermarket to buy less than 5 items, do not take a trolley. You don’t need a trolley for 5 items (assuming that they are small items). Having a trolley will make it more tempting to put extra items in it.

Make it quick

When going to the supermarket, try to make it as quick as possible. Yes set a time limit. Say I will do all the shopping in 20 minutes. This will make you go round and pick only the necessary items. The more time you spend in the supermarket the higher is the probability that you will spend more money.

  1. Excellent tips. I try to buy my daily needs from a small local store and avoid supermarkets all togather. In the end I spend less money and time.

However there are times when I just want to enjoy going to the supermarket - enjoy the variety and stock up for a few weeks or so.

What I try to do is stick to a budget when I am at a super market but that tends to be a hard thing to do ;-)
